3 Tips for Traveling with a Toddler

Summer is here and for many people that not only means plenty of opportunities to have fun in the sun, but it also means it is time to travel. So many families will go to weddings, take long vacations or even head out on weekend trips during this time of year, and if your family has a toddler in it—these trips can potentially seem quite stressful.

While the idea of traveling with a toddler may seem overwhelming, there are several things that you can do to make sure the entire experience is more comfortable for you, your toddler and everyone in your family. Here are three surefire tips that will help make traveling with a toddler a better experience for everyone.

  1. Pack Extra- Even if you are trying to keep your suitcases light, when it comes to packing for your trip with a toddler, you are going to need extra everything. This includes plenty of extra outfits. With all of the new experiences coming your toddler’s way, chances are they are going to find a way to soil or destroy an outfit or two. It is best to be prepared and while many toddler parents are pros when it comes to expecting the unexpected, it is an important tip that is worth the extra reminder. While you’re at it, make sure to pack plenty of extra snacks too! They really are a toddler’s best’ friend.
  2. Plan Your Vaccinations Accordingly- Routine vaccines are important for your toddler and you need to make sure that you stay on your doctor’s recommended vaccine schedule. However, think ahead when you are scheduling your vaccine appointments. Try to make sure that your child’s appointments are at least a week before you plan on traveling. If you are planning international travel, some travel vaccines should be taken 2-6 weeks in advance, so call your doctor if you are going somewhere adventurous.
  3. Book a Night Flight- When flying with a toddler, do your best to book a flight at night time. Hopefully, this means your toddler will be tired enough to drift off to sleep when they get on the plane. Make sure you have a large scarf with you. It can double as a blanket for a small toddler and be used to block daylight or plane lights when necessary, and it won’t take up any bag space. If you are planning on flying, you should also make sure that you have water, food, pacifiers, or games that will get your toddler talking while you are on the plane, as changes in air pressure can be a menace for a toddler’s ears.
