23 Jan 5 Ways to Help Your Congested Infant
2 min. readInfants get congested and while it may not seem like the most serious of issues, it is important to remember that congested infants do not have any way to blow their noses. This is why parents need to step in and help their little ones out—otherwise, your congested infant can be quite miserable. The good news is, there are several different treatments out there that can help infants find congestion relief.
Here are five different approaches parents can take.
- The Nasal Aspirator- This is one of the most common, and most effective solutions to helping a congested infant. These little devices, also sometimes called “snot suckers” are small plastic devices that you put up your child’s nose, and then you use suction to remove snot and boogers. These little devices are powerful and a favorite among many parents.
- Saline Drops- Simply saline drops can help thin the mucus and clear out stuffed up noses. They are simple to use in newborns—use a few drops in every nostril and use a nasal aspirator. Since it is just saline—it is completely safe.
- A Humidifier- If your child struggles with frequent bouts of congestion, then a humidifier can do wonders. There are many great nursery humidifiers out there for kids—but if you want to help with congestion, make sure that you get a cool-mist, not a warm-mist humidifier.
- Keeping Your Infant Upright- If your infant is congested a lot, try wearing them in a sling, where they sit in an upright position. This will help drain your baby’s nasal passages.
- A Vapor Bath- You should not be giving your baby cough medicine, but you can get them a vapor bath that will help clear out their nasal passages. There are many baby-friendly vapor bath mixtures that you can put in your child’s bath. These vapor bath mixtures contain extracts like rosemary and menthol that are released into the air during bath time and soothe the nasal passages. Plus, when you buy baby formula, you don’t have to worry about this product stinging your baby’s eyes.
