Breastfeeding Checklist: Signs for Nursing Moms

If you are a new mom embarking on the journey of breastfeeding for the very first time, chances are you have a number of questions. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and miraculous things that a mother can do for their baby, however, many women wonder if they are nursing correctly.

Breastfeeding can sometimes look different for different mothers. It can also sometimes be frustrating and difficult for new moms to embrace. This is why we have curated a “breastfeeding checklist” with several signs for nursing moms that will let them know they are doing things correctly.

Here are a few signs of healthy and natural breastfeeding.

  • Your baby’s head is in line with their body while breastfeeding.
  • Your baby’s mouth is wide open with their lips turned out.
  • Your baby is suckling on the entire areola with the nipple far back in their mouth (they should not be sucking on the nipple only).
  • Your baby’s chin and nose are resting against the breast while they feed.
  • Your baby is taking in deep, regular sucks of milk instead of light and quick suckles.
  • Your baby should be sucking rhythmically in deep, short bursts with momentary pauses in between.
  • Your baby swallows regularly while they are feeding.
  • Your nipple feels comfortable after a few moments of feeding—you should not experience pain while feeding or suffer from nipple damage.

These are all signs that you are engaging in nursing that is healthy for both you and your baby.
