2 min. read

Being a parent of a little one can often be a challenging and uncertain time, particularly for new parents. It is normal for parents to be worried about their baby’s health and about all of the potential risks that could get their little one sick. These are parts of normal pediatric care. However, pediatric care in the middle of a global pandemic poses a number of new potential threats and situations for parents to worry about.

Here at our Texas pediatrician’s office, we know that many parents have questions about pediatric care during COVID-19, and we are here to help with all of the questions that you may have. Here are some of our most commonly frequently asked questions from parents like you.

What Are the Symptoms of COVID-19 in Kids?

Symptoms of COVID-19 in kids include nasal congestion, fever, chills, shortness of breath, loss of taste, loss of smell, and sore throat. If you are seeing these symptoms in your little one, particularly loss of taste and smell, call a pediatrician right away.

What is the Biggest Difference Between COVID-19 and the Cold or Flu in Kids?

Many symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the symptoms of cold and flu in kids. However, the biggest difference is a loss of taste and smell. You do not lose taste or smell with the average cold or flu.

Are Babies Susceptible to COVID-19?

Yes. Everyone, even babies are susceptible to COVID-19. While it is rare, it is possible for newborns to even get COVID-19, especially with the new, more contagious Delta variant. Since babies cannot wear masks or get vaccinated yet it is important that you are taking extra precautions to keep them safe and out of danger, high-spread areas.

Can My Child Get Vaccinated?

Currently, children under 12 cannot be vaccinated against COVID-19. However, they should still be getting all of their regular routine vaccinations including the flu shot so they can continue to stay as safe as possible during these unprecedented times.

Is it Safe to Still Take My Child to the Pediatrician?

Yes! Here at Continuum Pediatrics, we have several precautions in place to make sure that our office is the safest place possible for kids during the pandemic. You should always still bring your child in if you are worried they are sick or need their regular shots or checkups. If you have questions or concerns always give us a call.
