How Often Should Kids See the Pediatrician?

2 min. read

Wondering how often your child needs to visit the pediatrician? You’re not alone. Regular checkups are more than just a time to catch up on shots—they help ensure your child is growing, developing, and staying healthy.

At Continuum Pediatrics, we follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended schedule for well-child visits. These appointments allow us to track milestones, answer your questions, and identify concerns early.

Well-Child Visit Schedule

Here’s a general guide to how often your child should see the pediatrician:

Infants:

  • First-week visit (3–5 days old)
  • 2 weeks
  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months

Babies grow quickly, and each visit checks weight gain, feeding, sleep, and development.

Toddlers:

  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months
  • 30 months

At these visits, we assess speech and motor skills, provide vaccines, and discuss behavior, potty training, and nutrition.

Preschool & School-Age Children:

  • Yearly starting at age 3

From age 3 onward, children should have a yearly wellness visit. These checkups include growth tracking, vision and hearing tests, emotional development assessments, and school readiness evaluations. They’re also a great time to discuss sleep, screen time, and social development.

Teens:

  • Yearly visits through age 18

As your child becomes a teenager, regular visits help guide them through puberty, mental health challenges, and healthy habits. It also provides a safe space for them to ask personal or sensitive questions.

Why Regular Checkups Matter

Even if your child isn’t sick, well-child visits are important. They help us:

  • Keep vaccines up to date
  • Monitor growth and development
  • Catch issues early (like speech or vision concerns)
  • Provide guidance on behavior, safety, and nutrition
  • Build a lasting relationship with your child and family
