Keeping Kids Active During Colder Winter Months

Keeping Kids Active During Colder Winter Months

3 min. read

Now that we are in the peak of winter, most parents are dealing with the same issue—keeping their kids active when the temperatures drop. Cold weather along with shorter days make it difficult for kids to get out and get moving. It is so important for kids to stay active all year long, even when it is cold outside. After all, an active child is a healthy child.

No matter what time of year it is, it is essential for your kid’s overall health and wellness for them to stay active, however as most parents know, motivating kids do this is much harder than it sounds, especially when the weather isn’t on your side. Here are some tips to help you during this time of year, or whenever Mother Nature isn’t cooperating with you.

Don’t Limit Your Trips to Outdoor Venues

There are so many people that assume just because it isn’t warm outside, it means there are no outdoor venues to visit. However, most zoos, farms and national parks are still open during this time of year. It is a great way to encourage your little ones to get out of the house, get moving and to learn some pretty fun facts while they’re at it. They can layer up and stay nice and warm and you can enjoy the fact that most of these venues won’t be very busy this time of year.

Indoor Obstacle Course

Obstacle courses don’t need to be super elaborate (though they can be if you want). Sometimes simpler is better and most often is when you’re entertaining little kids. So set up some pillows and chairs and get your kids moving!

Get Dancing

There is nothing that can get kids up and moving quite like having a little fun. Having a dance party is a great way to get your kids up off the couch and up moving. There are several apps and programs that have great kid-friendly dance playlists and even some fun dance games too.

Hula Hooping

Hula hoops have long been a fun activity for kids. Hula hooping doesn’t take up a great deal of space, it is a lot of fun, and it is actually a great workout for little ones.

Wii Fit

The Wii Fit is a great gaming counsel for kids, for a number of reasons. First, it keeps kids engaged and active because it is a video game, and we all know how much kids love video games. Second, it is a fantastic workout and a fun way for kids to stay active while indoors. Kids can play games on their own or compete with others in fun games that will have them up and moving.

Just because the weather isn’t cooperating, it doesn’t mean that you can’t help your kids stay active and healthy all season long. Keep these tips in mind this season and have some fun keeping your little ones happy and healthy!
