2 min. readThe summer and early fall is a great time for kids to get outdoors and play. However, in many places, especially here in Texas, the hot weather can pose a major threat to little ones. While many kids think of warm weather as a time for sports and swimming, for parents it is important to remember that it is also prime season for heat-related illnesses.
Heat related illnesses are very serious in children of all ages, and as a parent, it is extremely important to know the signs of this illness and what to do if your child starts exhibiting symptoms of heat related illnesses.
The Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness
Every parent should know the symptoms of mild, moderate and severe heat-related illness so they can step in and help when their child starts to exhibit these symptoms.
Mild Heat-Related Illness Symptoms:
– Excessive sweating
– Painful muscle spasms during or after activities, also known as heat cramps
– Swelling in hands and fingers
– Heat rash, or tiny red bumps on the skin
– Weakness
– Irritability
– Dizziness
Moderate Heat-Related Illness Symptoms:
– Excessive sweating
– Moist, pale or flushed skin
– Feeling weak or tired
– Rapid or weak pulse
– Severe cramps
– Weakness or extreme fatigue
– Headache
– Nausea or loss of appetite
If your child is exhibiting these symptoms, you should remove them from the heat right away and give them cold fluids to prevent dehydration. You can also bath your child in cool water to bring their body temperature down.
Severe Heat Related Illness (Heat Stroke) Symptoms:
– Excessive sweating
– Moist, pale or flushed skin
– Deep, fast breathing
– Headache
– Rapid weak or irregular pulse
– Dizziness
– Confusion or seeming delirious
– Fainting
– Convulsions
If your child has symptoms of heat stroke, call 911 and take your child to a doctor right away. Heat related illness is very serious and should be addressed right away.
