Allergies are unfortunately quite common in children and can range from being quite mild to quite serious. As parents, it is your job to be on the lookout for signs of allergies so you can get your child help right away. Being aware of the different signs of allergies is the best way to stay vigilant so you can spot the signals of allergies and make sure your child is getting the care they need.

What Exactly Are Allergies?

We use the term allergies quite flippantly in our world today—but what exactly are allergies? Simply put, they are problems in the immune system. Typically, allergic reactions happen as the immune system has a “false alarm” or reaction to something that it normally shouldn’t react to.

For example, the body usually defends itself against things like viruses, but sometimes, your immune system will violently attack exposure to things like dust, pollen, or even food.

What Are the Symptoms of Allergies in Children?

One of the most interesting things about allergies is that reactions can happen anywhere in the body, including the eyes, skin, stomach lining, throat, or sinuses. Some of the symptoms to look for when you are dealing with allergies include:

–       Sneezing, runny nose, or stuffing nose for no known reason.

–       Complaining of itching in the roof of the mouth or ears.

–       Watery, red, or itchy eyes.

–       Itchy rash for no known reason.

–       Asthma-like symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing.

–       Severe, life-threatening allergic reactions like anaphylaxis.

–       Trouble breathing, committing or diarrhea after exposure.

It is important to be on the lookout for issues like this, particularly if your child is too young to express feelings of discomfort.

What Causes Allergies in Children?

Every child is unique and different children are going to have different reactions to common allergens. These are some of the most common allergens or triggers that can cause reactions in young children.

–       Pollen from trees, grass, and weeds

–       Mold

–       Dust mites, feathers, and animal dander

–       Natural rubber latex

–       Mice, pests, and cockroaches

–       Foods, particularly processed foods

–       Medications

–       Bee stings
