21 Aug Signs of ADHD in Children
2 min. readAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts many children today. ADHD is about more than having excess energy, it can impact your child’s success at school and their relationships.
However, while ADHD is increasingly common, the symptoms of ADHD can vary and at times are difficult to recognize. It is important for parents to be on the lookout for these signs and symptoms so that they can get their child the help they need.
- Your child interrupts often. This is a sign of self-focused behavior when a kid seems to have an inability to recognize other’s needs. Children with ADHD often interrupt other people while they are talking or butt into games, interactions, or conversations they are not a part of.
- Your child has trouble focusing. Struggling to focus is one of the prominent tell-tale signs of ADHD. Your child may have a serious issue paying attention, even when someone is speaking directly to them.
- Your child has trouble waiting their turn. This is something that can seriously impact a child’s behavior in the classroom. This can also be prevalent when kids are playing games with other children.
- Your child can’t sit still. Being fidgety is one of the most physically recognizable signs that a child has ADHD. Many parents notice their children fidget, squirm, or try to get up when they are being forced to sit down. This can make classroom learning very difficult.
- Your child has a lot of unfinished tasks. If your child tends to start projects, homework, chores, or activities but then quickly moves on to the next thing that catches their interest before they finish—this can be a sign of ADHD. Many children with ADHD have
interest in lots of different things but struggle to complete those things. - Your child struggles to follow instructions. It can be difficult for kids with ADHD to follow instructions that require planning, which can lead to silly or careless mistakes. It does not mean that this child is lazy or not smart enough to follow the instructions.
