Tips For Dressing Your Baby in Winter

There are so many things that new parents need to worry about as they get used to taking care of their newborn baby. This includes protecting your baby from the elements. In the winter this can be a challenge. There is more that goes into this than just keeping your baby warm, you need to make sure that they stay safe and comfortable as well.

If the temperatures are dropping this winter, then you want to make sure that you keep a few things in mind as you dress your bay for the cold.

  • Layers Are Always Key. Babies are sensitive to the cold, so if you are chilly, your baby is going to feel even colder. However, that doesn’t mean you should just put the thickest sweater possible on your child. Dress them in layers, so they can move around and you can adjust their clothing as needed. Thin cotton clothes work well, as it is warm but still breathable.
  • Cover All Exposed Skin. While adult might not always need a hat and gloves, it is important to make sure that you are covering all of your baby’s exposed skin when they are going out in the winter. Mittens, thick socks and head coverings are very important with cold weather.
  • Don’t Forget About Car Seat Safety. One of most difficult parts of dressing a child for winter is making sure that you are still abiding by car seat safety rules. If you have your baby in a large, bulky coat it could compress the harness of the car seat and be too loose in an accident. With this in mind, it is smart to remove that large, bulky layer before you strap your child in.
  • Always Pack a Blanket. If you are headed out of the house and taking your baby in their stroller, don’t forget about a nice blanket. Blankets are a great way to add an extra breathable layer to your baby’s stroller. A great blanket will protect your baby from the elements and keep some heat in while you are out and about.
  • Don’t Over Do it. While, as a parent, you may be worried about your child being too cold in the winter, there is always the potential of your child overheating. Babies who are dressed in too many layers are at a greater risk for overheating and even SIDS. If you have been outside, make sure to remove your baby’s winter clothing and coats as soon as you come in.
