Baby Drool Rash

One of the many challenges that parents often have to face when they’re dealing with babies are rashes. While diaper rash is one of the most common skin conditions to impact infants, this isn’t the only type of rash that babies can struggle with.

Drooling in babies is normal, and typically it is a sign of teething. While most babies will drool, some babies drool more than others. When this happens, the frequent presence of saliva on the baby’s neck, chin, or chest can cause a red irritation known as “drool rash.”

Baby drool rashes are also a very common condition and one that parents may not be as prepared for. Every parent should know about this common skin condition, and it is often as easy as keeping your baby’s chin dry from drool. Here are a few more things parents can do to help eliminate this type of rash:

  • Always have a soft burp cloth near you at all times, so you can dab away saliva.
  • Pat off drool instead of rubbing it. Rubbing against the skin can cause irritation.
  • If your baby is starting to get red or irritated on the face, apply a thin coat of Vaseline to act as a barrier between your baby’s skin and their drool.
  • Use Vaseline or petroleum jelly to soothe your baby’s irritated skin.
  • Make sure to have extra soft bibs on hand and always use a dry bib instead of a wet one.

If you notice an ongoing issue with drool rash, make sure that you contact your pediatrician. Typically, drool rashes will clear up on their own after a few days. However, if one persists or seems to be causing your baby a great deal of pain or distress, you should always take them to a doctor for an evaluation. You should also take your baby in if their rash starts to get cracked or weepy.
